Haplogroup F (F-M89)

The ancestral trunk of most non-African lineages

Haplogroup F, defined by M89, is one of the most important nodes in the Y-chromosome tree: the great majority of non-African paternal lineages — including G, H, I, J, K and everything beneath K, such as R, Q, N and O — descend from it. Men assigned to F directly, rather than to one of its many descendant branches, are comparatively rare.

Where it is found

As an ancestral node, F's descendants are found across almost the entire non-African world. Men who test as F* — that is, F without belonging to a known downstream branch — are uncommon and are reported at low frequencies in parts of South Asia and, more rarely, elsewhere. In most cases a result that looks like 'F' at low resolution resolves, on further testing, into one of its major descendant haplogroups.

Origins and age

Haplogroup F marks a deep branching point associated with the expansion of modern humans out of Africa and across Eurasia. Its age is estimated in the range of several tens of thousands of years. Because so many major lineages descend from it, F is more often encountered as a conceptual ancestor on the tree than as a personal assignment.

Main subclades

F's 'subclades' are, in effect, most of the world's non-African haplogroups: G, H and IJK, the latter giving rise to I, J and K, and K in turn to the huge P, Q, R, N and O lineages. Rare intermediate branches sometimes labelled within F are found mainly in South Asia.

What this means for your research

A result of plain F almost always means testing has not yet reached the resolution needed to place you on your true branch. Further SNP testing will normally resolve F into a specific downstream haplogroup, and that is where any genealogical or geographic meaning begins.
