The lineage of the northern Fertile Crescent and Mediterranean
Haplogroup J2, defined by M172, is the second major branch of haplogroup J alongside J1. It is associated with the northern Fertile Crescent — Anatolia, the Levant and the Iranian plateau — and it spread widely around the Mediterranean and across the Near East. It tends to be a lineage of settled, agricultural and urban populations rather than the more pastoral associations often attached to J1.
J2 is common across the Near East, Anatolia, the Caucasus and Iran, and it is a significant lineage throughout the Mediterranean — in Greece, Italy, the Balkans and Iberia — as well as reaching into Central and South Asia. Its broad Mediterranean and Near Eastern spread reflects a long history of movement, trade and settlement across that region.
J2 is generally thought to have originated in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent, in the region of Anatolia and the surrounding highlands. Its spread is often discussed in connection with the expansion of farming and later with the many population movements around the Mediterranean over subsequent millennia. As with J1, deep dating estimates vary and have been revised as sequencing has improved.
J2 divides into two large branches, J2a and J2b, which between them account for its wide distribution. J2a is the more common and internally diverse, spread across the Near East, Mediterranean and into South Asia; J2b has its own distinct distribution across the Balkans, the Near East and South Asia. Numerous downstream lineages carry sharper regional signals.
A J2 result points to ancestry in the northern Fertile Crescent or the broader Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. Because the haplogroup is so widespread, the subclade is what localises it, so downstream SNP testing is the step that turns a broad regional signal into something more specific.
