A major ancestral node of Eurasian and Oceanian lineages
Haplogroup K, defined by M9, is another major branching point in the Y-chromosome tree, ancestral to a very large set of lineages including the huge P branch — and through it Q and R — as well as N, O and several lineages of Oceania and Southeast Asia. As with F, men assigned directly to K are much rarer than men belonging to its many descendant branches.
K's descendants dominate the paternal landscape of Eurasia, the Americas and Oceania. Direct K assignments that do not fall into a known major downstream branch are uncommon and are found mainly among some populations of Southeast Asia, Melanesia and Australia. Certain rarer branches historically grouped under K have distinctive distributions in these regions.
Haplogroup K marks a deep node associated with the expansion of modern humans across Asia, from which many of the continent's and the wider world's dominant lineages later arose. Its age is estimated in the tens of thousands of years. Like F, it is most useful to think of K as an ancestral trunk rather than a personal endpoint.
K gives rise to an enormous portion of the tree: the branch leading to P, and through P to Q and R; the branch leading to N and O; and several lineages of Oceania and Southeast Asia. Many of these were once grouped under older umbrella labels that have since been reorganised as the tree has been refined.
A plain K result usually indicates that testing has not yet resolved your true downstream branch. Further SNP testing will normally place you within one of K's major descendant haplogroups, which is where geographic and genealogical meaning begins.
